Hints And Ideas For Making Your Own Website
This section is devoted to assisting you in developing your own
website.
Get yourself a good HTML book. No matter what program you use
to make your own website, there will come a time where you will need
to learn some HTML. There are some things that the WYSIWYG (What You
See Is What You Get) (pronounced wizzywig) programs just don't do right, so you need some
knowledge to be able to correct these problems. I suggest the book:
"HTML For The World Wide Web" by Elizabeth Castro in the 'Visual Quickstart Guide' series. This is particularly good with example
code, an explanation and screen dumps of each instruction.
Do not use frames. These used to be very popular with web
designers because it made for very easy navigation and website
banners. The search engines can't find information on your website
easily if you use frames.
When making your webpages, save the files often to prevent loss of
data incase of computer lockups or power problems.
Use a WYSIWYG program to make a website and then study the
HTML code which the program produces. This together with the book,
will give you an insight into HTML website design.
Have a go at making a website using a simple text editor like
NOTEPAD, which comes with Microsoft Windows. Together with your
book, you should be able to come up with a reasonable website.
This is the only way to really learn.
You will have to stick with the strict guidelines set out in
the book, for your website to work properly.
Make sure you have a "Title", "Keywords", and a "Description" in the
<HEAD> section of each page. These must be relevant to the subject
matter and vital for search engine recognition. Some say that
"Heading" fonts are also important on each page for this reason.
Checkout other peoples websites and see how they do certain
things. Do not steal text, images or buttons, but just look at the
layout of the page etc. This can be achieved by going to the "View"
menu in Internet Explorer, then select "Source". You will then see
the complete HTML source code.
Divide your site up into separate pages for each defined
subject/purpose, instead of having one long scrolling page.
For security reasons, ensure that any email links are scrambled so
that the email spammers do not find them. The Webmaster Tools
above include scripts for this application.
Choose colors carefully. Try not to use a black or very dark background.
This used to be popular, but save it for that special site which
suits that color. Choose a color selection for your background,
text, buttons etc. which go together well. You may want to see what
others have done here as well and get some ideas for your site.
Do not go overboard with different fonts on each page. Keep to the
simple well know and readily available ones. If you use a special
font, the viewer may not have that font and the browser will default
to an available one. This may then present your page differently
than you intended. Some common web fonts are Verdana, Helvetica,
Arial, Times and Geneva. Note: Special fonts can be converted to
images so that they will show on all browsers and computers without
having to have that particular font available.
Before adding graphic images to your page ensure that they have been
resized to the size that they will be shown on the page; this will
reduce the file size. Usually this is in the .jpg format and with
enough compression to reduce the file size even further but still
have enough detail and crispness.
Note: Keep the original aspect ratio of the image to prevent the
height and width being distorted.
If you are having trouble with

Once you are experienced with HTML you may want to have a look
at other ways to improve your website. Things like CSS (Cascade
Style Sheets) and JavaScript are very handy to add features and
control to your website.
Makes sure that any links to external websites from your
website open that website in a new window. This way the viewer does
not leave your site. The new website is presented on top of yours
and when this website is closed your website is still there. This is
accomplished by using the "_blank" as the target for your link eg.
<a href="http://www.mprocsg.kestar.com.au" target="_blank">.
When linking to a PFD file use the target="_blank" feature as
mentioned above. This presents the file with a blank html file in
the background, but not an error message page.
